The C.E.R.T. (County Emergency Response Team) was developed in August, 1996 to handle civil disturbances. It was a joint collaboration between the Sheriff's Department and the Department of Corrections, Camp Hill, PA. Team members were recruited on a volunteer basis with the stipulation that all training exercises are mandatory. The team trains four to six hours every three weeks. The 25-member team is comprised of 24 men and 1 woman. The team also includes one team leader, two squad leaders, two snatch recovery team, and two chemical team members. Each team member is equipped with one 36 inch riot baton, one FP1 riot helmet, a M17A1 gas mask and a flack vest. The C.E.R.T. team would be activated through the Mutual Aid Program and/or strike injunctions, riots, protests, and/or natural disasters.
